Fashion in the 1930s saw a return to more elegant, feminine and curve-enhancing styles (especially when compared to the boyish styles of the 1920s). New fabrics, including rayon and matallic lame were very popular and were enhanced by shiny buttons, sequins and glass beads.

The depression had a major impact on 1930s fashion and "less is more" became a 30s fashion motto. This is evidenced in the sewing patterns of the 1930s, which often used smaller pieces to help maximize fabric usage.
