1940s Sewing Patterns
In the early 1940s, Hollywood tailors had exaggerated the drape to the point of caricature, outfitting film noir mobsters and private eyes in suits with heavily padded chests, enormous shoulders, and wide flowing trousers.

During the war, many people had restrictions on the number of new clothing they could buy which led to new levels of creativity in home sewing. For example, McCall's produced patterns for transforming men's suits into women's clothing.

After the war ended, high fashion returned to a more lavish, romantic style, led by the designs of Christian Dior.
