Woman's World 5663; ca. 1936; The shirtwaist dress is firmly entrenched in the hearts of us all because it is so wearable & altogether youthful. whether you are 16 or 60, you can wear versions of this important fashion theme & always feel appropriately dressed. Another point in favor of this type of dress is that it is easy & inexpensive to make. You can have this one with short or long sleeves (see the small view). See how few the pieces are in this design, a study of the construction shown below will quickly tell you the entire story. Notice that the back of the blouse & skirt are cut in one which makes fitting easy. Of course your pattern will be accompanied by a cutting & sewing guide which will tell more in detail every step necessary in the making of this simple dress, so that even if you are a beginner you can accomplish this with ease & with success. 5663 cuts in size 12, 14, 16, 18 years, 34, 36, 38 & 40 bust. 16 requires 3 1/2 yds. 39" material for dress with short sleeves. It can be made in many of the new sheer wools, plain or printed crepes, rayon novelties, wash silks, crash type cottons, linen pique or heavy dull sheers.

Illustration & description are from NEEDLE ARTS THE WOMAN'S WORLD BOOK OF NEEDLEWORK FOR 1936 - a catalog offering various needlework patterns & kits for knitting, embroidery, crochet, sewing, etc.
